Moni Island Greece - A Beautiful Untouched Destination

Moni Island Greece - A Beautiful Untouched Destination

Apr 15, 2023

Moni, the unknown little islet sitauted southwest of Aegina island. Its a tranquil destination that offers respite from fast-paced life of Athens. The islet's sparkling turquoise waters and lush greenery make it a popular spot for sailing and day trips. Despite being uninhabited due to a lack of drinkable water, Moni is home to various animals such as deer, kri-kri goats, wild peacocks and falcons.

With small beaches scattered around the islet, particularly on the north coast, Moni offers ideal locations for swimming and relaxing, surrounded by stunning pine forests. Those who love hiking or climbing can challenge themselves on the steep mountain on the northern side, where a German lookout post still stands, used during World War II to defend the port of Piraeus from the Allies.

If you're planning a visit to Moni, remember to bring your own supplies, including food and drinkable water, as there are no amenities on the islet. You can reach Moni by taking a boat from Perdika village, with regular itineraries available during the summer months.

The boat ride lasts approximately 10 minutes, and you can enjoy the scenic views of the Saronic Gulf during the trip.

Where Is Moni Island?

Moni Island is a tiny islet thats sits off the coastal village Perika in Aegina.

How to get to Moni Island

There are a couple of options on how to get to Moni. It all depends on where you are in Greece.

If you are based in Athens for a few days, you can take a day cruise that takes you across the Saronic Gulf. The day cruise includes the islands of Aegina, Agistri and Moni. The cruise will leave from Piraeus port.

The second options is for travellers who are based in Aegina. At Perdika there a small boats that can take you over to Moni island beach. The journey takes around 10 minutes. The boat ride starts from €12 per person.

What To Take with You on Moni

Make sure to pack some water, a towel and snacks with you, especially if your plan is to cruise around Moni and the surrounding islands.

There is a beach bar, sunbeds and umbrellas on the main moni beach, but with sunbeds starting at €15, my pro tip is to use that money on venturing around the island to discover your own patch of crystal clear water to swim in.

One other thing to take with you are some water shoes. As some of the islets can be rocky, its best to cover up your feet!

Things to do on Moni island

The only thing to do when visiting Moni is to sit back, enjoy the sun and sea and also the peacocks and deer that roam the beaches and relax!
