DISCOVER ASTYPALEA

This tiny butterfly shaped island is 18 kilometres long and 13 kilometres wide that boasts 4 main villages: Chora, Analipsi (or Maltezana), Vathi and Livadia. On top of the main town sits the old Venetian castle with the tavernas of Chora sitting below.
Getting there
A ferry from Athens will take you 9 hours and cost €44 one way. You can also reach Astypalea from Naxos, Amorgos, Paros, Donoussa, Rhodes, & Tilos
During the summer season the domestic airport opens on the island accepting flights from Athens. For flight times and cost it is best to check a flight website for the most up to date information.
Beaches
Pera Gialos: Located in Chora and next to the port, the beach has crystal clear waters that is surrounded by tavernas and cafes. The beach is partly organise, so if you want an umbrella and deck chair its best to get to the beach early!
Agios Konstantinos: Located 7km outside of Chora, the stunning alcove has blue waters along the long sandy beach. The beach has the basic amenities and is partially organise with a few umbrellas and deck chairs. During the summer months the taverna is opened serving traditional Greek seafood.
Vathi: Located 21 km northeast of Chora, access to Vathi is via a small 50 metre bay opening that makes the beach feel and look like a lagoon. The beach is shallowed water and pebbled.
Boat trips are available from Vathi to the Cave of the Dragon with has an impressive formation of stalactites and stalagmites.
Psili Ammos: Located just outside of Chora. The road to the beach are not the best so the advised method of travel to the beach is by boat from Pera Gialos.
The beach is split into a sandy section and the rocky section - it is best to stay out of the waters around the rocky part of the beach. As the beach is off the beaten track there are virtually no amenities or tavernas in sight.
Island transport
Driving around the island is the best option. It takes just over 1 hour and 30 minutes to drive between two of the farthest points on the island. It is an easy island to drive around with decent roads. As you approach certain beaches the roads can become gravel, so caution is required. Car hire is available on the island.

Where to eat
Ouzeri Anastasia: Located at Pera Gialos. If raki or ouzo is your choice to drink with delicious meze plates Pera Gialos is the spot for you. Located on the beach, stick your feet in the sand, relax look up at the Astypalaia castle enjoy the food and drink.
Akti: A tasteful selection of pasta, risotto, Greek fish soup and the classic summer "mezedes", all blended with local produce. They have an impressive cellar with wines from around Greece that compliment their food beautifully.
Astakoukos: Located at Analipsi along the coast the beautiful taverna serves traditional Greek food. This place is a must visit!
Things to do
The best thing to do on the island is to jump in your car and explore all of the little coves and beaches on offer. If you need a change of pace the island has some great hiking trails which lead to small beaches and old churches.
