Koufonisia

Koufonisia is a small island located in the Cyclades archipelago, south of Naxos and east of Amorgos. Despite its small size, Koufonisia has become increasingly popular over the years, attracting tourists from all over the world.

The region consists of 3 islands, Ano Koufonissi, Kato Koufonissi, and Keros, all which are accessible via a short boat trip

This stunning island boasts pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and traditional Greek charm.

Getting There

Getting to Koufonisia is relatively easy, with direct flights available from Athens to Naxos. Once you arrive in Naxos, you can take a ferry or a speedboat called the Express Skopelitis to Koufonisia. The journey takes approximately one hour, and the views en route are simply breathtaking.

If you prefer to travel by ferry from Athens there is a ferry from the main port of Piraeus which departs 3 times a week. Its a 5-8 hour voyage depending on the vessel you choose.

Beaches

Koufonisia-beach

Finikas Beach Koufonisia: To me this is the best beach on Koufonisia. Its a short 15 minute walk from Chora (main village). Upon arriving you will see a beautiful white sandy beach and crystal clear waters. If you get peckish, there is a taverna close by.

Nero Beach Kato Koufonisia: Jump on a boat and take the trip to Kato Koufonisia and to Nero Beach. The beach is both sand and stones so make sure to wear something on your feet!

Koufonisia Caves: The caves are a must visit. The long beach of Pori and their cliffs create a scenic view. Swimming around the cliffs you will discover the collection of sea caves which are great to swim in and out of!

Unlike the more popular islands, Koufonisia beaches are not organise, so do not expect table service, umbrellas or even deck chairs. Its pure BYO beach fun.

Island transport

Renting bicycles to get around the island is your best option as there is no bus or other public transport. There are also boat trips that can show you more of the island and its beauty.

Where to eat

Mikres Cyclades: Located in town Mikres a modern take on Greek food. All ingredients are locally sourced and the menu has a great balance of traditional and modern Greek food

Kalofego: Located in Pori (Ano Koufonisia) the view and the food is to die for. Kalofego serves traditional Greek food.

Venetsanos: Located at Kato Koufonisia serving the best fish on the island. Not only are their fish dishes great their prawns, calamari and mussels will hit the spot!

Things to do

The island is the perfect getaway. If you are looking for a chilled relaxed destination where you can swim, snorkel, eat, read a book and drink, Koufonisia is the place for you.
