Best restaurants in Athens: International Edition

Need a break of souvlakia and gyro? Missing pizza or maybe a Pad Thai? Well outside the world of Greek salad and tzatziki Athens has a thriving international food scene.

Over the last 5-8 years the Athenian pallete has been expanding, and now with the explosion of international travel the people have spoken and have been craving more foods from around the world.

We have put together a list of our favourite go to restaurants, when we need a break from traditional Greek food.

Italian Restaurants

Tre Sorelle Pizza

Pizza and cocktails in one of the best suburbs in Athens, Pagrati. Tre Sorelle makes one of the best Neapolitan pizzas in Athens, and their cocktails are delicious as well.

The restaurants has both indoor and outdoor seating, and the staff are great!

Cupola

Cupola is your traditional trattoria restaurant. Serving all of the classic Italian dishes and a great drinks menu. The staff are great and the outdoor seating is perfect for a summers night.

Thai Restaurants

Thai Zab

Located in the suburb of Gazi, Thai Zab is up there with one of the best Thai restaurants in Athens. The chef is from Thailand, and when we asked for extra spicy food, the chef came out to see where we were from (the table was made up with mostly Australians visiting Athens - they are known for weeding out good Thai food; the hotter the better!)

The restaurant is in an old Neo Classical building, and the food and staff match the beauty of the building. The highlight was the Pineapple fried rice! Its a must try.

We ate almost everything on the menu and we were not disappointed.

Tuk Tuk Thai Street Food

Located in the popular suburb of Koukaki, Tuk Tuk is probably the most well known Thai restaurant in Athens. Its a small restaurants and there is usually wait to get a table as the restaurant is filled with tourists and Greeks.

Their food tastes fantastic and if you are around the area its a just visit. Their curries are a must try!

Indian Restaurants

Naan Stop

Located in the suburb of Ampelokipi, Naan Stop has one of the best Keem Naans in Athens. Their food is packed with flavour, with the Chicken Biryani and curries (yes all of them) being the highlights!

Great for getting Indian delivered to your Hotel or Airbnb!

Pink Elephant

Sitting on the border of the city centre and Exarcheia is Pink Elephant. An authentic Indian restaurant serving delicious food. The naans are fluffy, the curries are packed with flavour and spice.

Vietnamese Restaurants

Dao Vietnamese Cuisine

Located at the back of Psyrii serving some authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Their Banh Mi's are very tasty, and as close as you will get to a traditional one.

Their Bun's are tasty and in winter their beef Pho is tasty and meaty!

Vietnam Street Food

If you are in the centre of Athens and looking forsome Vietnamese food, then this is your place. Not far from Syntagma Vietnam Street Food serves some delicious food.

The spring rolls are tasty and crispy, the Bun's are delicious and the staff are perfect. A great family run restaurant.

Japanese Restaurants

Birdman

Located just a short stroll from Parliament (where the changing of the guard happens) Birdman serves some great Japanese bar food.

Its all delicious and the staff are perfect, and their cocktails are well made.

Its a bit on the expensive side, but it is well worth the visit.

If you are looking for a cheaper option to Birdman they have opened EKIBEN KITCHEN. It opened during that time a few years ago, when we were told to stay inside, and has kicked on to be its own brand.

Yoko Sushi Bento

Located in Pagrati Yoko Sushi serves some of the freshest and tastiest sushi in Athens. Its a mixed fusion of Japanese and Western dishes (only in name though). Their ceviche’s (Sea bass is perfection) and tartare are packed with flavour. 

Almost a must try is the Dragon rolls. So So good!
